Omar Rodriguez-Graham’s small and sensitive sculptures serve as maquettes, or three-dimensional studies, for his accompanying paintings. Inspired by artists as varied as John Singer Sargent, Euan Uglow, Cy Twombly, and Willem de Kooning, Graham has developed a highly acute sense of color and light. He is able to infuse space and airiness with just a few flat strokes in his intimate paintings, drawing comparisons to Morandi’s spare but subtle still lifes and Richard Diebenkorn’s California palette
By positioning the object and its representation in tandem, Graham doubles the emphasis on his original formal composition’s color, shape, and balance. Even as deftly painted as his images are, this mirroring also reminds the viewer that seeing, is not the same as painting--a mediated experience. Before developing his current subject matter and style, Graham was known for his large-scale paintings of violent drug murder scenes in Mexico City, a far cry from the interlocking brush strokes that break forms down to simple planes of color.
Rodriguez-Graham completed his MFA in Painting from Temple University in Philadelphia, and has since been featured as an emerging artist on ABC News. Recent exhibitions since 2009 include: Arroniz Arte Contemporáneo, México D.F., México, Museo de Arte Moderno, México D.F., México. Rodriguez-Graham lives and works in Mexico City.
